This piece is a very brief history of the slave passage to Trinidad and its aftermath described through the voices of two calypso performers- the Griot or storyteller. It shows a doorway to the Middle Passage where captive Africans were shipped to the Caribbean and Americas. The sails of a ship and a graphic of shackled feet tell of separation and fear. It is also a story of perseverance in the face of history and insurmountable odds. They sing a story of loss of homeland and inability to return because there is no going back. It is unlikely that those slaves had any idea that their ancestors would see a free, thriving Trinidad, a democratic republic ruled by ancestors of slaves and the indentured.
