Mary Made It Studio
A call to worship by a group of Spiritual Baptists. Sometimes called ‘Shouters’, the practice was originally developed by the Yoruba on the island of St Vincent where they mixed Christianity with African customs to create alternative forms of religious expression. Included in the rituals was bell-ringing, borrowed from the Catholic mass, and clapping and chanting from Africa as a substitute for drumming. Their loud preaching and late-night services were considered a nuisance and sacrilegious by the influential Catholic church. Once outlawed it was legalized in 1917. Today the Spiritual Baptists are a large, accepted religious entity.
